Julie Chapman, Karleen Edmonds, Stevie Wheatley, Trudi Bennett, Zeb Stone & Co-drivers!

Story

Five KidsCan staff and their trusty co-drivers will be joining the epic Pork Pie Charity Run in April 2019 to somehow coordinate their movements and get a MINI from Kaitaia to Invercargill. That’s over to 2500km in just six days. Along the way we will be doing our bit to raise funds for New Zealand children who deserve a chance to succeed in life regardless of their financial situation.

Big thanks to MINI for once again supporting the run and for providing us with a vehicle. Would be a long walk otherwise.

“[Together] we’re taking this car to Invercargill!”

Meet the team...

Zeb & Alex
Leg 1: Kaitaia to Taupo
The father and son team of Stones will lead out the KidsCan team for the run, tackling the longest leg (at least by distance) from Kaitaia to Taupo. Alex (Dad) has the experience to know that Zeb’s idea of running part of the run isn’t really legit and he’s better off staying put inside the MINI. Between Alex’s legendary CD collection and the quality programming of RNZ National they have on-road entertainment sorted. Snacks wise, lots of licorice is likely to be consumed.

Stevie & Dylan
Leg 2: Taupo to Wellington
Stevie and Dylan are a couple of country kids who’ll be making their way to the capital of NZ for only their second time. Stevie’s secretly ecstatic to take Dylan to one of her favourite childhood memories – Smash Palace! On the run, you’ll probably hear them listening to rock as old as most of the MINI’s.

Trudi & Clive
Leg 3: Wellington to Christchurch
Trudi and Clive have recently celebrated their 20-year wedding anniversary and are completing the leg from their original hometown of Wellington, to Christchurch. Clive’s competitive nature as a former National Mountain Biking Champion will mean he is keen to drive this leg straight over the mountain range (who needs a road?) but Trudi will be the voice of reason and suggest skirting the coastline with the rest of the group. As long as she packs enough snakes and jet-plane lollies, Clive will be happy to listen to her singing her 80s playlist en route.

Karleen & Ali
Leg 4+5: Christchurch to Franz Josef to Alexandra
The best way to describe KidsCan’s Karleen Edmonds would be; competitive to the max, so fundraising will be a major focus. Her partner Ali Mau will be looking to add value when she can, while enjoying the scenery on the most beautiful leg of the Run - Christchurch through Franz Joseph, to Queenstown. There’ll be a struggle for control of the audio, between RNZ news and 80s bangers (Ali) and the latest from Rhianna mixed with country and western classics (Karleen.) Snacking in the car will be less of a contentious issue - Poppa Jacks and anything made of chocolate!

Julie & Cain
Leg 6: Alexandra to Dunedin to Invercargill
Taking the team home will be KidsCan’s fearless leader Julie (who happens to get carsick) and her husband Cain (aka Noddy). They’ll be packing a good supply of Natural Confectionery Company party mix and cheezels. So just look out for the ones on a sugar high rocking out to everything from 2Pac to Christopher Cross! They can’t wait to catch up with the returning teams from 2017 and meet the new teams on the run. Remember if you need a sugar hit, go find them and they’ll be sure to hook you up. After six days it might be needed!

KidsCan Charitable Trust

KidsCan is helping Kiwi kids living in hardship reach their full potential and create brighter futures for themselves.

We provide Kiwi kids in need with food, clothing and health items at school and early childhood centres, so they can get into the classroom in a position to learn. KidsCan does this because we believe that education equals opportunity, and all children, regardless of their social economic background should have an equal chance.

For just $30 a month, you can join the thousands of New Zealanders dedicated to changing a child’s life. Find out more at KidsCan.org.nz
